Just weeks post-RNY, the “inner-athlete” trapped in my mind for years was dying to come out and play! Even in the trenches of massive weight, I’d always tried to do “athletic stuff,” but always ended up injured, sidelined, or otherwise incapacitated due to my severe obesity. With the weight melting away, the only thing stopping me was education regarding how to SAFELY proceed – physically and nutrition-wise, due to my reduced capacity to eat.
While able to find many success stories online of people who had done just what I was hoping to do (something BIG…though not sure what), I was unable to find any “how-to” plans. There weren’t any books on the subject, web sites for those success stories, or even people who had a clue about how to progress. My own crew of medical professionals wasn’t willing to address the challenges of wanting to be a bariatric athlete.
One day, after Googling myriad versions of the search term “bariatric athlete,” I came across Lea’s site – Bariathletes.com. Her personal background with endurance sports, education in nutrition, and work with bariatric patients gave me hope that she might understand what I needed – a hand up.
From my very first tear-filled conversation with her, I believed in her ability to not only sympathize with my predicament, but also to HELP me…and give me HOPE. She clearly stated that I COULD achieve my goals, and that I could LEARN to safely navigate this new lifestyle and achieve my dreams, eventually creating my own exercise and nutrition plans, if that was where I wanted to land.
Right off the bat, I was sidelined with a foot injury. (Not due to Lea’s plan, just as a result of a still-obese body trying to do “athlete” stuff!) Lea adjusted my schedule to keep me moving without pain – and encouraged me to not give in to my past pattern of giving up – but to find a way to work through this setback, setting the pattern for tackling future challenges to come. How empowering to be able to keep going…and FEEL successful! I was becoming an athlete!
All along the way, Lea reminded me that the power was within ME to make this happen, and she helped me find those places within myself, while educating me on the technical side of things. Having my menus and training plans done for me during this time freed me to discover the FUN that I’d been missing, and achieve the SUCCESS that kept me going.
I’ve done a few 5K walk/run races, I’m scheduled for a couple of longer ones this summer (8K & 10K), a Warrior Dash event in the fall, and even have a ½ Marathon on the horizon for next year. Lea got me back on my bike, encouraged me to cross-train (rediscovering water exercise and yoga), and I’m even considering a triathlon in the next year or so! I AM A BARIATHLETE!!!
I cannot recommend her services & program highly enough. Not everyone has the desire and/or drive to do endurance events (even in the “skinny” world). But, for those of us of the mind to – especially after rediscovering our true selves through weight-loss surgery – Bariathletes is the place to find that passion.
