Hi! I am Lea Crosetti Andes and I created BariAthletes® to empower bariatric athletes in fulfilling their fitness dreams.
I have been developing and running bariatric programs and working with a team of physicians, surgeons, behaviorists, and other coordinating medical staff for almost 10 years. As an Ironman triathlete, I understand an athlete’s nutritional needs beyond the textbook and know how to properly fuel the body. My expertise lie in combining my knowledge of physiological changes from bariatric surgery and my skills in meeting the nutritional demands of exercise and sports.
I saw a need for BariAthletes® when more and more of my bariatric patients were losing weight and start training for endurance events, yet they did not know how to fuel their new bodies. Because these endurance events traditionally require a fuel regimen that includes a large amount of carbohydrates, bariatric athletes were at a loss. Not only do they tend to follow a high protein diets, but they also only have a one ounce pouch for a stomach, and too many carbohydrates (particularly the simple sugars found in sports products) could trigger dumping syndrome. Knowing bariatric athletes are not able to follow the typical sports nutrition guidelines, I have formulated nutrition plans to specifically meet their nutritional needs.
I also provide motivational coaching to help my athletes learn to identify with and embrace their inner athlete. Being able to communicate regularly helps with accountability as well as identifying triggers and other challenges. And in the end, I am always thrilled to cheer them cross that finish line.
For fun, I love cooking and creating new recipes and feeding friends and family tasty nutritious meals. Tasting different cultures food is one of my favorite parts of traveling. I love staying fit by trail running through our redwood mountains. Its such a majestic escape! And for my downtime, there is nothing like relaxing with a good book at the beach.
